Ensuring adequate nutrition for babe
Monitoring babyâs weight gain is something your pediatrician or care provider will help you do, which is why those INITIAL CHECKUPS ARE SO IMPORTANT.
Paying attention to diapers will help you know if your babyâs getting enough nutrition. By the time your newborn is 4 to 5 days old, he or she should typically have six to eight WET DIAPERS each day. Expect babe to want to eat eight to 12 times a day or more. (Remember: Babyâs stomach is only about the size of his or her tiny fist!)
Also, KEEPING A RECORD of babyâs daily feedings and diaper details on a tracking sheet or app can really help get everyone on a healthy path. Ask for a form where you deliver, or find a smartphone tracking app.
THE SCOOP ON POOP â Babyâs first stools, called meconium, are thick, sticky and tarlike. After this meconium has passed, breastfed babiesâ stools will transition to a soft, seedy and mustard-yellow color. Formula-fed babiesâ stools have more of a thick pudding consistency, yellow or brown in color.
Most babies will tolerate MOMâS DIET without issue. But sometimes babyâs digestive system may not be quite ready. Contact your provider if baby develops a rash, excessive fussiness, gas or a chronic runny nose. Adjusting momâs diet until babyâs gastrointestinal (GI) tract further develops may do the trick, so evaluate potential dietary changes with your babyâs provider. Also ask him or her about VITAMIN D SUPPLEMENTS for baby, especially if youâre breastfeeding.
Note: If youâre breastfeeding, the American Academy of Pediatrics suggests holding off from using a pacifier for three to four weeks, until nursing is well established. It could interfere with breastfeeding, as some babies may have a hard time with the differences between sucking while nursing and pacifier sucking. Pacifier sucking also may unintentionally delay a feeding. New babies need to eat often, and pacifier use too early or too often may affect the supply and demand of milk production.
